I think some of the confusion is arising because people believe by randomg you mean people would get random skills assigned to them. Generally this isn't how a sealed deck tourny works - you start out with a set number of skills randomly selected, put those in a big pool and then the people participating go in a rotation, selecting one skill at a time.

The idea is to have a sealed deck tournament. What you're suggesting is totally opposite of sealed deck.
- edit -
If this isn't to your liking, maybe Sealed Deck isn't for you--because that's what Sealed Deck is all about. Not trying to be an ass. But it's part of the fun. The challenge of constructing a deck/character from randomly drawn skills and seeing how it works against your opponent.
|
To whom are you talking? It is hard to tell what "you" you refer to, without a quote or anything. Sealed and matched sealed are both along the lines of your suggestion - matched just means that an opponent startted with the same skill set to choose from.

A sealed deck tournament would be something along the lines of "you can pick any character you want, you'll get 50 attirbute points, item upgrades and runes are prohibited, and you can use the following skillls: Any skill you can find in Pre-Searing Ascalon" Something like that anyway. You could make it so that everyone has to use PBAoE spells or elemental damage weapons only or anything else. It's just limiting the options you have by paring down the skill list in some pre-arranged way so that designing a strategy is a bit more challenging yet quicker because you don't have so much to wade through.
A matched tournament would be "You can play any of the following templates: blah" or "your character must have these weapons and these skills" where everyone agrees to prearranged character builds. Rather than getting to design your character it comes down to how well you can recognize and utilize the strength of your character.
A random tournament would be "We have the following skills, professions, and items available to use and we're going to assign them to you according to whatever random scheme we've come up with". In other words, you're going to get something and you have to figure out how to use it rigt out of the box. You don't know what you get ahead of time so you'll have to rely on your raw ability to succeed.
They're similar in that they're all placing limitations on what you can have but the intent and outcome of each are quite different. Personally, I think all those and more ways of playing would be fun to have but they're all working on different talents.

Here's a good way for it to work.
Here is how ArenaNet could implement a system like this. I've done some game design work, (not programming, just design), and this seems pretty attainable.
You form a group of EXISTING characters, and enter a specialized area, much like the arenas now.
Upon entering the area, the "Gods" transform each person to a LVL 1, RANDOM CLASS, stripping away of all armor and items temporarily. (this way everyone would still have the same name.) There would have to be a built in rule of no more than 2 of any Primary profession, to avoid having a group full of one class.
They would have a group of NPC's each of which offers the choice to PICK whatever secondary profession you WANT. (Like the NPC's you choose your second profession in in presearing Ascalon) Once you've picked your secondary, then in your Skills 10 random skills in your main and 5 from your secondary would pop up. You could only pick from these skills.
Then you'd have X attribute points to assign whever you like.
Then you have X minutes to strategize.
You would have X amount of gold. There would be a special Merchant, Weaponsmith and Armorsmith. There you could buy items. With the limited gold, you would have to strategize... You could pick the best weapon they have for your class, but that means you get none/very little armor upgrade, or vice versa. The merchant could sell you a Rune to increase one of your skills, but it would eat up a lot of your cash.
Once you've completed everything, and each team member presses the ALL READY button, you are randomly grouped with another team. Then you could have a random assortment of PvP maps... or to be really interesting, you are situated between two halls, and it would be a capture the flag type of game...
The problem I see is the time... Would people really want to spend 15 minutes pretime before playing? Or could you possibly do it in less time... I mean after doing it a few times... you could get ready in 5 minutes, press the all ready button and go... They should really incorporate this into the game, as I envision a backlash before they can release the first expansion. Or this COULD be in one of the expansions, only those who buy the expansion can get to this area. There would be a ladder system for individual players who are good at this blank slate form of PvP.
It also could, and should, be only available to fully ascended characters. This would give a reason to keep playing. It could also spawn some UNIQUE items if you're group wins, or after you've reached a certain point in the ladder system.
Speaking of things to add to the game, I think a more massive PvP would be fun, like with three groups of 8 playing King of the Hill, or something like that... just my ideas.

Howdy,
To address the confusion over what -I- mean by random assignment, the character will be randomly assigned a large pool of skills and spells to match his class.
I don't mean to suggest he'll be randomly assigned eight skills. That'd be way too limiting.
If this isn't what Sealed Deck is to some, my only defense is that this is how I did Sealed Deck. :/ Either way, it's nice to see so much interest.

Here is my suggestion. You click "Enter Mission..."
[I will use X a lot. These are numbers I have not come up with yet and probably need to be balanced.]
0] You are placed on a team of six and randomly assigned a primary and secondary.
You will start at level X.
Your appearance will be RANDOMLY ASSIGNED!!!! [muahahahahah!]
There will be one of each profession as a primary on each team.
There can be, at the most, two of a profession as a secondary.
[This will give both teams balance [and a monk] while still allowing for diversity.]
A window will pop up in which you will create your character. You will have X minutes to makes your character. [X ~ 1:30]
1] The first tab will give you access to your "tournament pack" of X Attribute Points and "booster" of 30 Skills.
3 of these Skills will be Elite Skills randomly chosen from your two professions.
15 of these Skills will be from your primary profession.
12 of these Skills will be from your secondary profession.
Ressurection Signet will always be available as an option.
At the cost of X Attribute Points, you may "mulligan" for a new "booster. [X ~ 1/8 of the Attribute Points initially assigned]
[If statistics stand, this should give you a good palette of skills to work with, with around 2-4 from each attribute.
2] The second tab will give you access to the equipment available for you.
The best armors available at level X will be available, including +skill caps. Simply choose each part. I guess dye could be available, but it's really not necessary.
The weapons and off-hand items your Attributes will allow you to use will be displayed. Like in PvP, their base stats will be identical to others weapons of the same type.
[There should be something special about the weapons as well, but I haven't though of anything balance and worth using yet.]
3] There will be a button at the bottom to Accept your character.
When you hit Accept or your time runs out, you will then enter a random arena. [I'm not positive what rules or game should be used. I would do Deathmatch, but that's just me].
The match will start one minute after everyone loads. In this time, discussing exactly what you are and how you can work with others is wise.
Game on.
Feedback is appreciated.

Thank you.
I've always loved card games but discovered that the winners are always the ones who spends loads on it. I was pretty sure that I was better than them in all aspects of the game, but they just had the better cards. That's why I would attend all the Sealed Deck tourneys I could.
I want to see this implemented in GW as much as the next guy. It has many aspects similar to card game already. Why not go another step?

No no no no no no... NOOooooOOOOoOoooo
I cannot STAND the idea of having "packs" and "boosters"... Don't get me wrong, I played Mt:G as much as the next guy... (probably more, I was a tournament player back in 95) but I am SOOOOOO sick of video games using colectible 'cards' or 'booster packs' and stealing the ideas off these card games!
There are already enough similarities to card games, (mana, limited selections of spells), that we DON'T need to go any further. I also don't think NCSoft would go for the idea, as it really pulls from the fantasy world. Nothing else in this game has boosters or cards or anything, so it needs to be done in a fantasy setting, i.e; the GODS have stripped you of your identity and you must choose a new one to fight... or something along those lines.
Just my opinion!

Aaaahhhhh!!!!
Oh, I was using those terms to liven up my writing and to connect it to the CCG from which this idea originates. I hope that they devs don't use those words in the game and come up with something as creative as yours.

Rofl. Unfortunately, I have the tendency of doing that, simply by posting one of my essays... T_T
I would honestly love to see this implemented. If anything, it would allow ANet another way to brag about their "skill, not hours played" line.
